Pagani Huayra: History & Fun Facts

Named for a Wind God

Pagani unveiled the Huayra in 2011, naming it after Huayra-tata, a wind god in Andean and Inca mythology believed to control storms. Founder Horacio Pagani chose the name to fit the car's focus on aerodynamics.

That naming choice followed the pattern set by Pagani's first car, the Zonda, which was also named after a South American wind. Both names reflect founder Horacio Pagani's Argentine roots and his fascination with airflow shaping a car's performance.

A Small Workshop in Modena, Italy

Pagani builds the Huayra by hand at its factory in San Cesario sul Panaro, near Modena, Italy, the same region that is home to Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati. Production runs to only a handful of cars per year.

Horacio Pagani worked at Lamborghini before founding his own company in 1992, and he built Pagani's first carbon fiber molds himself before larger automakers had fully adopted the material for road cars.

Four Independently Moving Aero Flaps

Each corner of the Huayra carries its own small active aerodynamic flap that tilts up or down on its own, adjusting downforce at that individual wheel during braking, acceleration, and cornering rather than relying on one fixed wing.

That four-flap system let Pagani skip the large fixed rear wing common on rival hypercars, keeping the Huayra's tail smooth and rounded while still actively managing airflow at speed.

Gullwing Doors With a Practical Purpose

The Huayra's doors open upward and outward on a hinge rather than swinging out sideways like a conventional car, a gullwing design Pagani chose partly because the car's wide sculpted body made traditional doors impractical in tight parking spaces.

Gullwing doors have appeared on a handful of famous cars before the Huayra, most notably the 1950s Mercedes-Benz 300SL, and using the design again tied the Huayra to that small lineage of dramatic, engineering-driven door designs.

A Twin-Turbo V12 Built by Mercedes-AMG

Rather than building its own engine, Pagani commissioned Mercedes-AMG to develop a bespoke twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 specifically for the Huayra, producing at least 720 horsepower depending on the model year.

That partnership let a tiny manufacturer like Pagani access engine engineering resources far beyond what its small workshop could develop alone, while Mercedes-AMG got a showcase for its performance engine division outside its own badge.

Interior Details Inspired by Watchmaking

Pagani designs the Huayra's cabin with exposed mechanical linkages for the gear shifter and switches, styled to look like fine watch movements, a signature touch Horacio Pagani has carried through every model the company has built.

That level of interior detail takes Pagani's craftsmen hundreds of hours per car to assemble by hand, part of why total Huayra production across all variants has stayed in the low hundreds since the model launched.

The Roadster and BC Track-Focused Variants

Pagani later added an open-top Huayra Roadster and a lighter, more track-focused Huayra BC, named for longtime Pagani customer Benny Caiola, each keeping the same twin-turbo V12 while sharpening handling or removing the roof entirely.

Those variants let Pagani stretch the Huayra's production run across nearly a decade, continuing to sell hand-built examples even as newer hypercars from other manufacturers arrived with more raw horsepower.

A Titanium Exhaust Tuned by Ear

Pagani engineers tune the Huayra's titanium exhaust note by hand, testing different pipe lengths and chamber shapes to get a sound the company considers part of the car's character, not just a byproduct of the V12 underneath.

That attention to exhaust sound reflects how Horacio Pagani treats the Huayra as much like a piece of rolling sculpture as a performance machine, a philosophy that shows up in every hand-finished panel and switch inside the cabin.
