Rivian R1T: History & Fun Facts

First Deliveries in September 2021

Rivian delivered its first R1T trucks to customers in September 2021, beating both the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck to market and making the R1T the first mass-production all-electric pickup truck sold in the United States.

A Gear Tunnel Behind the Cab

Production R1T trucks include a lockable storage compartment called the gear tunnel, a pass-through opening built into the body between the cab and the bed that owners can access from either side of the truck, separate from the front trunk and the bed itself.

Four Individually Controlled Motors

Top R1T configurations use four separate electric motors, one at each wheel, letting the truck control torque independently at every corner for tighter turns at low speed and better traction when climbing over obstacles.

Built in a Former Mitsubishi Plant

Rivian builds the R1T at its factory in Normal, Illinois, a plant the company purchased and retooled after it previously built Mitsubishi vehicles, giving Rivian an existing large-scale manufacturing site instead of building a factory from the ground up.
